Fixodent Zinc Poisoning from Denture Cream

Fixodent zinc poisoningWhen common denture adhesive creams – such as Super Poligrip and Fixodent – were introduced to the market, manufacturers added zinc to these products.  According to the manufacturers, the addition of zinc significantly improved the adhesive effectiveness of the cream (which is essential to avoiding denture slippage.) Zinc also diminishes the strong medicinal odor usually associated with denture creams.

The problem with zinc is that high levels can deplete the body of copper, which is essential for good health and proper neurological function.  Because denture wearers worry about slippage, liberal amounts of denture cream are often applied to the dentures. Unfortunately, excess cream was swallowed and absorbed through the intestinal tract, leading to a Zinc overdose and a number of dangerous side effects.

Because manufacturers were not required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to list ingredients or warn of the potential of Zinc poisoning, many denture wearers were unaware of the dangers until they began to experience the side effects.  The most common side effect was a condition called neuropathy – a neurological condition that results in unexplained numbness or weakness.  Other zinc-poisoning victims reported loss of sensation or other nerve disorders.
