Actos Description
Actos® (generic name pioglitazone) is a class of insulin sensitizing diabetes substance referred to as thiazolidinediones (TZDs). Actos helps the body utilize the insulin it produces. Actos can be added to certain diabetes medications such as insulin, metformin and sulfonylurea in order to reduce the blood sugar levels. Actos is in the same class as Avandia. Because of the dangerous side effects of Avandia, many doctors have prescribed Actos for their Type 2 diabetes patients.
Actos is prescribed in tablet form with strengths of 15, 30 or 45 mg. The dosage is based on the individual patient response and the judgment of the prescribing doctor. The doctor may order glucose tests to help determine the proper dosage. While most patients start off with 15 mg. the average dosage is 30 mg.
Actos is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, based inSan Diego,California. Actos currently represents a third of the company’s total net sales. Actos® is the registered trademark of Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc.
